Top Tips for a lengthy Commute

The pros of the electric scooter

Planning to use your electric scooter when commuting might be something you will need to do. Maybe you need to take it on a bus or train for a longer part of the journey if so it is important to make the portability of your scooter a priority. Trains are usually not a problem as most of the over rack compartments accommodate for luggage that’s is considerably bigger than the average portable folded scooter. On the bus, it will be a question of holding it close to your body or between your knees when sitting down. Looking at the Mosquito f.e, when folded its dimensions of 43,7 x 7,9 x 13,4 inches makes this a breeze. Few electric scooters on the market can compete with the Mosquito as far as both weight (22lbs) and portability go, and still have acceptable performance. And if the Mosquito is a tad too “light” for you, even the dual engine big tire Wide wheel, when folded, 43,1 x 8,6 x 16,1 inches, weighing 50 lbs is very manageable. For reference, 50 lbs are roughly what the average carry-on luggage is allowed on an airplane.

None of the scooters that are foldable take up as much overall space as an upper-size suitcase does. Only in length, as the average large suitcase is 27 inches tall/high and scooters approx around 43 inches. Of course, when we travel abroad on a plane, we probably carry as much as we can manage and are allowed. This gives you a rough comparison as to how manageable your choice of scooter can be.

If you look at the Mantis, which is a step up all kinds of ways in the electric scooter realm, you will find it is a bigger heavier escooter with some proper muscles on it. However, folded it still manages  49 x 24 x 19 inches and clocks in at a weight of 60,8 lbs. 60 lbs are what the average person checks in on a flight. So if you can manage a bag of that weight, schlepping it into a car, or up to some stairs when arriving home, you can lift the Mantis for a few seconds. After all, that is probably how long you will lift it at the most. It is not to be carried around but definitely manageable to lift onto a bus or store in an overhead compartment on a train.

The various escooters on the market have an enormous advantage compared to other options by way of being quick, silent, not cumbersome like a bike and are versatile when it comes to planning one’s commute, even if the scooter is not to be used the whole way.

Obviously the electric scooter is not a daytime vehicle only. It will likely be used to bookend the day, so being seen and being able to see where you are going is of utmost importance. A lot of escooters have LED front & back but of varying quality. If you know you will be using your escooter a lot when it’s dark outside, it would be wise to choose one that considers or features this. The Mantis f.e. has LED lights front/back and a strip on the side. Lights draw the power of course so there is a limit as to how much illumination one can have before the main purpose of traveling is being affected. It might be good to invest in extra attachable headlights for maximum visibility.

A huge bonus when choosing best electric scooter, is if there is a USB port on it. After all, the smartphone will be in the pocket (hopefully…usage not to be recommended while riding your electric scooter)….and do we ever want to be able to charge our beloved smartphones. FluidFreerides Mosquito, as well as the Horizon, are some of the options on the market that are equipped with a USB port. Very clever that.

All in all, these are the basic things to consider when planning your commute. The various options available on the market now as far as electric scooters go should cover your needs and make sure you find the perfect match for your purpose and lifestyle.
